Seeming to muddle internal and external reality, alchemists used chemical transformations to assist their abstract thought. Similarly, hypertext fiction has the potential to integrate postmodernism into our perception of the world. It exemplifies non-linear thinking, and illustrates the role of context in generating meaning. This use of context can disrupt traditional ideas of genre, and allow meaning to be mutable through the user's participation.
