While the Christian Church as an institution dominated Europe, the work of individual alchemists compensated for its one-sidedness, "as a dream is to consciousness" (Jung, 1998: 272). This relationship sheds light on the relationship between our dominant institution of global economies and our troubled individuality.

The religious feeling that once showed us our place in the world seems lacking, and we vacillate between seeing ourselves as insignificant, economic units and irreplaceable, unique individuals. The www seems a utopia of collective individualism, but postmodernism offers a more profound reconception of what "individuality" is.
