THESIS PROOFREADING

Expert academic proofreading before your thesis goes to the binders. This includes checking your formatting, your referencing system, and whether your bibliography's complete, as well as all the actual writing, stray punctuation, and those typos that spell-check misses.

Do I want proofreading, editing, or substantive editing?

  • Proofreading makes it correct – if you want your work checked for errors, with as few changes as possible, you want proofreading.
  • Editing improves your style – if you want the words to flow better, you want editing.
  • Substantive editing adds more oomph – if you think the text needs some reworking, you want substantive editing.

I'll always respect the spirit of your original work and I won't change your style unless you want me to. Sometimes a grammatical quirk is part of the flavour; a good edit keeps the original voice.

Proofreading

...is also sometimes called line-editing. I will ensure you have...

  • perfect grammar
  • correct punctuation and spelling
  • appropriate word choices (eg. I affect something and have an effect)
  • style-guide consistency

If you want to guarantee that your writing is correct, but you don’t want it changed, proofreading is best. If you’d like more help with your style, you may want editing.

Editing

...is a more involved process for those who want their actual style improved. It includes proofreading and also the following, where necessary:

  • changing sentence structure
  • rewording phrases
  • altering word choice for better style
  • reorganising sentences within paragraphs
  • ensuring style-guide consistency

This editing is stylistic, not structural: it will improve your style, but not change the overall structure of the text. If you'd like feedback and advice on how to improve your work, or you think it needs a thorough overhaul, look at Book coaching.

Substantive editing

If your text needs more than just editing, this allows for partial rewrites (typically about a third of the content). It includes proofreading and editing as above, but goes a step further. A typical example is updating and refreshing your website, where the content is largely the same but the language needs more oomph and a bit more SEO-friendliness.

Substantive editing isn't a total rewrite - it remains your writing, just much better! If you want me to rewrite something completely, look at Copywriting.

Layout

If you're self-publishing, I can create you a professional print-ready layout at the same time, to your publishing house's specifications. Check the Layout page for more details and examples.

What next?

Email me for a quotation, and let me know the text's length in words (in Microsoft Word, Tools > Word Count will tell you) and what it's about. If you can, attach a sample page or two. I'll send you a written quotation and an estimated delivery date.
