Ghostwriting

what      how      copyright      the writing      what next

I've ghostwritten six novels and am working on a seventh: a trilogy of political spiritual thrillers set in the near future, a political drama, a contemporary realistic comedy, and a past-to-present comedy drama. I also write magical realism, fantasy, sci-fi, fairy-tales, and straight realism. I love trying on different genres and voices in different books and find this one of the most exciting aspects of ghostwriting

What’s ghostwriting?

You have an idea for a story – whether it’s a single page of typing, a detailed synopsis, a screenplay, or a sheaf of old envelopes with scribbled notes – and you want it to be a novel. I write it under your name, making it spring to life in vivid detail.

How will it work?

From your outline, I develop a full-length book (approx 80 000 - 100 000 words) of high quality, ready-to-publish writing with fully-developed background, plot details, and characters.

First, contact me with your story idea – if you want a non-disclosure agreement, I can send you one. We discuss it, to make sure we're a good match. I’ll send you a contract agreeing our terms. The contract gives milestones for you to approve the writing – usually at 10 000 words, half-way through, and again at three-quarters of the book – so you can check the progress and direction before it’s completed. I usually keep fairly close contact with my clients, sending chapters through between milestones and chatting on Skype about the direction it's taking and plans for the rest. (This isn't a requirement, though - the degree of your involvement is up to you!)

When the book is complete, edited and proofread, I’ll send you the final version laid out for publishers, a paragraph description, and a full page synopsis.

What about copyright?

There are two options and the fee is adjusted accordingly. Either I sign copyright over to you completely, or we agree a slightly lower fee and I receive a percentage of any royalties. In both cases, you’re named as the author.

What’s your writing like?

You can read excerpts of my writing in different genres. For confidentiality, I can't put samples of my ghostwriting on line, but I can send you sample chapters of completed novels on request.

What next?

Email me about your idea or to ask for a non-disclosure agreement. We'll discuss it over email and on the phone, then I'll send you a quotation and an estimated length of time. If you're happy with that, we can start your book!
